Brightshine Drapery is the newest of the three Brightshine ranges at Residium, alongside Brightshine Shutters and Brightshine Blinds. After more than 40 years making blinds and shutters for New Zealand homes, Brightshine has extended into curtains and Roman blinds, at what it describes as wholesale drapery prices, direct from the manufacturer.

The range covers curtains, which Brightshine calls the perfect way to soften a room, in a wide selection of fabrics and pleat options. Sheers soften light and keep daytime privacy. Blockout curtains suit bedrooms and media rooms. Roman blinds sit between the two, giving a fabric look with the neatness of a blind, and they are a good answer for a bedroom or any window where full curtains would be too much. Whichever way you’re leaning, everything is made to measure.

In Showroom 160 | Section B at Residium, easiest reached through the ABI Interiors showroom, the drapery display is a working fabric library rather than a wall of photographs. Sample books from James Dunlop, Charles Parsons, Warwick, Zepel and Mokum hang from curtain rods on a mobile rack, so you can pull one out, feel the weight of it and hold two side by side. That is the only reliable way to judge drape, because two fabrics in the same colour can hang completely differently, and a sheer that looks delicate on a screen can read heavy once it is made up. A hardware board alongside carries rods, finials and brackets, with metal finish samples to compare.

Because drapery is the newest part of the range, the fabric library at Residium is the best place to understand what’s possible. There is more for you to see and handle in Showroom 160 than there is to read anywhere else.

Three of the displays show curtains working with something else, which is how most good rooms are actually done. A sheer curtain with a blockout roller, where the roller darkens and the sheer softens, described on the card as the cost-effective combination. A fully lined curtain over a bi-passing shutter. And a fully lined curtain over a 100% timber shutter, labelled for its superior thermal qualities, because two layers over a window hold heat in a way one layer can’t.
